But there was one other consequence of the 1667 peace which should be noted here. The Breda settlement among England, France, and the United Provinces marked the final distribution of colonial possessions in the Caribbean.

On June 29, the other ships set sail for Bonaire, where they arrived four days later and were rejoined the next day by the Brack. On the night of the seventh of July the Dutch fleet sailed along the southern coast of Curac;ao, the Brack with Otzen aboard leading the way westward. At noon the next day they passed a huge cross standing embedded in the rocks. Otzen hesitated, uncertain whether he had reached the entrance to the bay. When he finally decided, it was too late; the strong current and the heavy breeze had driven the ships far beyond the entrance and Van Walbeeck discovered to his annoyance that it was impossible to turn back.
